Used Buying Checklist: 15 Things to Check Before You Pay

A universal secondhand checklist for used, refurbished, and open-box listings. Use it before the price makes the decision for you.

The rule

Trust evidence, not condition labels

Used, open-box, and refurbished labels can be helpful, but the safer buyer looks for proof: exact model, clear photos, working tests, missing parts, lock status, return terms, and true total cost.

Universal checklist

Check these before buying used

01

Identity

  • Exact model, generation, storage, size, or voltage is stated.
  • Photos show the actual item, not only stock images.
  • Serial, settings, or label proof is visible when relevant.
02

Condition

  • Damage is shown clearly, including ports, corners, hinges, and screens.
  • Main functions are tested with photos, proof screens, or short video.
  • Battery, moving parts, motors, sensors, or wireless features are not vague.
03

Ownership

  • Previous-owner accounts and activation locks are removed.
  • Workplace, school, carrier, or subscription locks are not hidden.
  • Digital games, subscriptions, or cloud access are not counted as resale value.
04

Total cost

  • Shipping, tax, missing parts, chargers, batteries, and adapters are included.
  • Repair or replacement risk is priced before comparing with refurbished.
  • The deal still clears a walk-away savings target.
05

Exit plan

  • Return policy, as-is terms, and seller proof are read before payment.
  • Fragile or large items have a clear packing or pickup plan.
  • If proof is missing, ask first instead of negotiating blindly.
