Start with low-risk basics
Clamps, levels, hammers, pry bars, hand saws, socket sets, and sturdy toolboxes are often safe used buys. Their condition is visible, and small wear does not ruin their purpose.
Rust is not always fatal, but bent jaws, cracked handles, missing socket sizes, and stripped adjustment points are reasons to negotiate or skip.
Be cautious with cordless platforms
Cordless tools can be excellent used buys when you already own the battery platform. If you do not, price the battery and charger before comparing the deal to a new kit.
A bare tool without battery may look cheap while costing more than a sale bundle after accessories.
Test moving parts
For drills, sanders, saws, and grinders, ask for a short video showing startup, speed control, and shutdown. Listen for grinding, wobble, or burning smells if inspecting in person.
