Avoid account-locked devices
Security cameras, doorbells, and some hubs may remain tied to the previous owner. Ask the seller to remove the device from their account before purchase and confirm reset instructions.
If the seller cannot prove it is removed, do not count on support to unlock it for you.
Check ecosystem fit
A cheap sensor is not cheap if it requires a hub you do not own. Confirm whether the device works with your current platform and whether it uses Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread, or a proprietary bridge.
Privacy matters
Used cameras and speakers deserve extra caution. Factory reset them immediately, update firmware, and avoid any listing that includes someone else's account or cloud subscription.
Listing checklist
- Previous account removed
- Required hub identified
- Firmware support still active
- Power adapters included
- Privacy reset completed before use
