Lens mount beats megapixels

A modest camera with affordable lenses is usually better than a high-spec body trapped in an expensive lens system. Check what a normal prime lens and a basic zoom cost before you buy the body.

For beginners, a complete kit with battery, charger, strap, and lens is often worth more than a body-only bargain.

Sensor and shutter questions

Ask for a photo of a plain wall or sky at a narrow aperture to reveal dust spots. A few dust marks are normal; heavy spots, scratches, or fungus are bigger concerns.

Shutter count matters for DSLRs, but overall condition and testing matter too. A low count camera stored badly can be worse than a higher count camera that was cared for.

Battery and charger reality

Old batteries may not hold charge, and missing chargers can erase the savings. Confirm whether the charger is original, whether extra batteries are included, and whether third-party replacements are still easy to buy.
